Urgent Relief Needed in India

As you may have heard, monsoon rains have recently lead to significant flooding in North India, where over 2 million have been affected and 225,000 homes have been destroyed. This disaster, although serious, hasn’t received the media attention one might expect, and consequently many are suffering and dying with no access to relief. As with other natural disasters, an even greater toll will be felt if issues of safe drinking water, food supply, medicine and temporary shelter are not attended to swiftly.

Within the Sitapur district where we are working, many are starving and susceptible to disease, while many of the villages are mostly under water. While the people in this region are predominantly Muslim, a recent move of God’s Spirit has seen a number of small Christian communities formed in the area. This movement is being lead by a group of former Muslims who are working to plant and support new Churches in the region.

This is a time when the global arm of the Church can empower local hands within these house Churches to have a deeper impact in their communities. We are trusting that the delivery of much needed provisions will allow these believers not only to meet their own needs, but also to serve their Muslim neighbours in a way that reflects Christ’s deep love for them. According to our contact in the area, “We have already seen that [these new believers] are becoming a giving community, as they have been caring for many of the families this past month from their own limited resources.”

Our brothers and sisters in India have already begun to distribute relief boxes that include:  food, medicine, clothes, matches, candles, chlorine for water and a plastic sheet for shelter. So far we have reached 330 families and their have been many opportunities to serve. We are still early in the relief effort however, and we do covet your prayer and support.

Please consider joining us in this effort to bring hope to the victims of North India – hope for health and survival, but also the hope that comes from the good news of the gospel.
