“What’s stopping you from going now?”

Kate* was surprised by this direct question and unsure of how to answer. She was meeting with MBMSI’s General Director Randy Friesen and this is what he asked her when she mentioned that she was considering going out as a missionary in a few years.

As a college student, Kate had strongly felt God calling her to missions but this call had faded over time. Now Kate had a great job, great friends, and a great church. But inside she felt lost and she felt God nudging her heart again toward missions.

One Sunday, as her church was praying for a couple who were heading out as missionaries to Nepal, Kate heard God say to her, “Kate, it’s time. It’s time to make that phone call.” She had been exploring MBMSI’s website and knew that God was telling her that she needed to call MBMSI.

Kate received confirmation that this was what God was calling her to do when a friend approached her after the church service. He told her that he had been talking to MBMSI’s General Director Randy Friesen earlier that week and felt that he was supposed to tell Kate to call him. And God had reminded him again that morning to go to Kate and tell her to call Randy Friesen! Kate was amazed by God’s clear guidance and she called Randy Friesen two days later. It was when she met with him later that week that Randy asked her what was stopping her from stepping out on mission now. He invited her to attend MBMSI’s Spring Adventure, which was beginning that Sunday.

The week of Spring Adventure is a time where participants learn about MBMSI’s core values and vision and have the opportunity to interact and share with MBMSI staff. There was one spot left for Spring Adventure but Kate didn’t think it would be possible for her to go since she was working all week.

The next day Kate asked for a few days off of work so that she could attend part of Spring Adventure. She even told her boss that if the week went well then she would be resigning in a few months!

God gave Kate peace as He provided for her and led her into missions. He directed her to step out in faith and she attended MBMSI’s Missionary Training Institute (MTI) that fall. Now Kate is preparing to serve on a church planting team in a restricted access country. She is excited to see how God will continue to provide for her needs as she learns to depend on Him more and more in each day.
