ESL in ACTION Print
MBMS International’s 2008 summer ACTION : Winnipeg program sent a team of two girls, Cindy Elias and Jessica Reeve, to Toyota City, Japan to minister beside MBMSI missionaries Laurence and Leona Hiebert for six weeks. While in Japan they exercised their teaching skills as they administered English as a Second Language courses to eager Japanese students.

It was the very last English class of the day in the city of Komaki. Only two women had shown up and all four ladies spent the hour-and-a-half period talking about Canada, their families, and their dreams. At 8:30pm Cindy and Jessica began wrapping things up when one of the ladies expressed her disappointment, saying that she still had many questions to ask. They encouraged her to ask all the questions she wanted. Much to their surprise, the first thing that popped out of her mouth wasn’t about life in Canada, but this: “How do you know that your bible is the true bible?” She wanted to know the difference between Christians, Mormons, Catholics, and the many other faiths of the world. The girls explained these differences to the best of their abilities, and in the end all they could do was bring the focus back to Jesus. Cindy and Jessica shared how God had transformed their lives and the amazing love that He has for us all. They told her that the only way that we can spend eternity with Jesus and live the abundant life that God offers is through a relationship with Christ.

The lady looked like she was a little bit confused, but when Cindy asked her if she would like to have this relationship, she said yes. At that point Cindy was uncertain if the lady had understood everything because the she then expressed that she wished all of these things could be explained in Japanese. It was Saturday night, so Cindy decided to invite her to church the next morning with the assurance that the pastor would be able to explain some of what she and Jessica had told her. Though she agreed to come, Cindy wasn’t sure if she meant it. In the Japanese culture it is more common for a person to not follow through on a promise than to say no directly to someone’s face. But thankfully God is much bigger than culture! The Japanese student did show up the next morning for the service – and she even stayed for lunch!

Although Cindy doesn’t know what God has been doing in her student’s heart since then, she is certain of one thing: He ignited a desire within her, and He will be faithful in following it through.
