Lead Team, Member Care
My story:
I was born in northern India (Kalimpong) to missionary parents Jac & Helena Dyck. Mom & Dad introduced me to my Lord and Saviour when I was 5 years of age, and some 6 years later on October 3rd, 1965 I was baptized. Early the following year we came back to Canada spending my teenage years in Abbotsford and Langley.
I received my formal Bible training at Winkler Bible College. The added benefit was that I met a wonderful lady there! Our common interest was singing. We traveled most weekends with our singing group and realized that we really enjoyed each other's company. We were married 3 years later.
Carol was born in St. Catharines, Ontario to Harvey & Agatha Gossen and was raised in a wonderful Christian family home. Carol was (and still is) one of those very wonderful ladies who helps build the marriage into an effective team. She has willingly moved with me 10 times in our first 22 years of marriage, fully supporting and encouraging me. She has a beautiful gift of hospitality which has always meant lots of visitors over for wonderful cooking & baking! Carol has always lived the belief that relationships are everything!
We are celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary this year.
God has blessed Carol and I with two sons. Nicholas, our oldest, is in his late 20's, married 4 years, and is enjoying a woodworking career in here in Abbotsford. For some 3 years he traveled with Celebrant Singers, a mission agency that uses music and the spoken word to present the gospel throughout North America and around the globe. God used this time to introduce him to the lady of his dreams, as Diana Mehrwein, hailing from Eugene Oregon, was the flutist in one of the teams. Our second son Nathaniel was born 8 years after Nic and would be 19 now. Jesus called him home at the age of 4 months. Carol and I dedicated both of our sons to God in their infancy, using that time of dedication to give our sons back to God, asking Him to do with them what he would, and reminding ourselves that our children are on loan from God.
Returning from our honeymoon I commenced my banking career. From collecting delinquent loans to granting credit to developing new commercial business, the training was tremendous. Our years in the banking industry took us to five different cities while working for two major Canadian banks. My experience in the banking industry taught me how to assess people's character, how to deal with stress & difficulty in life and it certainly reinforced a very important belief - relationships are everything.
After thirteen years I left banking and moved into the private business world of pupil transportation. I had the joy of being an active part of a wonderful family business which grew substantially in the nine years I was with them.
Subsequent to the business world experience, the Lord let Carol and I into the pastorate. There I had the privilege of filling the role of Executive and Missions Pastor. Working alongside our Senior Pastor Chris Douglas and a gifted group of Pastors and Support Staff I have grown in my faith, my knowledge in Christ, and my experience as a Christ follower. Relationships have gone very deep with many faithful people in our church as we've mobilized a number of ministries from scratch, and as we've strengthened and built up numerous ministries that have been in existence for many years prior to my coming here. The secret has been to rely on people! There is no question that people make the difference, and always will!
While pastoring, I joined the MBMSI board for 2 years. This was a time of learning and appreciating much of the MBMSI history and the centuries of years of service by many faithful workers.
For the past two years I have been actively involved in the role of Member Care at MBMSI. Providing support for our workers globally and locally in crucial areas of health...emotional, spiritual, physical, mental, relational, marital, financial...
Carol is a tremendous support to me. Building on her gift of hospitality, Carol has actively contributed to the hospitality role that Coffee Connection plays in our church. She is a wonderful leader, organizer & recruiter.
Carol works part time at the House of James (Christian bookstore) filling the greeter and floor sales staff role beautifully. That is truly who she is, as she loves being with people and interacting in ways benefiting the store and also serving our community.
I have enjoyed community involvement in a variety of ways over the years, including Peel Children's Safety Village in Mississauga, Kiwanis Club of Ottawa, Board member with Greater Europe Missions and Board member with the Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery.
Due to our many moves, we've enjoyed involvement with numerous different churches and denominations. Associated Gospel, Christian & Missionary Alliance, Fellowship Baptist, Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada as well as several Mennonite Brethren churches have given us a broad ranging perspective of God's saints.
