There are about 15,000 homeless children struggling to live from day to day on the streets of Kinshasa. They are forced on to the streets for a number of reasons including: a mother unable to provide support because of an abandoned father or an unknown father; step-parents who accuse the child of sorcery and bringing calamity on the family; and chronic disease (HIV/AIDS) or deformity. In fact, these children continue to be routinely physically and emotionally abused and exploited by civilians, police and soldiers. They are recruited by political parties to perform mass demonstrations creating public disorder. They are forced to spy and perform small robberies. They commonly accept a life of prostitution and sexual favors in order to survive. While in detention, there is no one to defend them and they are usually locked together with adult criminals and not fed or given medical attention. While in the streets, they are a part of their own culture of violence and aggression. Bomoyi Ya Sika is an effort to response to this desperate need.
Vision:
Bomoyi Ya Sika provides a home for abandoned children living in the
streets of Kinshasa, DRC. Bomoyi Ya Sika educates primary and secondary
aged children, grants access to vocational training for the older
children, promises healthcare and adequate clothing, and assures a
home. For children under 16 years of age, Bomoyi Ya Sika attempts to
reunite children with their families or find a foster home. If this is
not possible, the children stay in a home operated by Bomoyi Ya Sika.
Older children are given vocational training and encouraged to be
self-supporting.
Project:
1. Mercy Home: Bomoyi Ya Sika
would like to build an orphanage or “mercy home” with capacity for 100
children. They already have land, but capital is needed to build a
structure which would include a dormitory both for boys and girls, a
living area, activities room, 3 class rooms and a multipurpose room for
vocational training.
---- We would like to raise $50,000 for phase 1 of this project ----
2. Monthly support: Support children on a daily basis:
a. Food: $10/month provides the basic staples of Fufu (manioc porridge) and vegetables for one child over 1 month
b. Home: The hope is that the present rented facility would be
replaced by a new building. Utilities and upkeep will cost about
$5/month per child. Presently we have other subsidies to cover rent.
c. Clothing: $6/month provides a basic budget which includes a school uniform.
d. Health: $10/month provides a basic budget to see receive care
at a local clinic including treatment for the children with HIV/AIDS.
e. Schooling: $6/month provides a basic budget for materials and other school fees.
f. Transport: $2/month covers transport to special events, church and special training classes.
g. Administration: Presently there are 5 people participating in
Bomoyi Ya Sika on a part-time basis: the director Rev. Kapay Nzey, the
coordinator Rev. Muller Ndunzi, the secretary Miss Lisa Nsundi, the
Bible teacher Miss Elise and the Mercy Home Mother, Mama Honorine. The
cost to help support these people is about $10/month per child.
h. MBMSI overhead: In order to keep this website up, manage
money and make reports on the ministry, MBMSI charges 7.5% which comes
to about $3.70/month per child.
---- Consider a monthly donation of $25-50/month ----
Please consider participating by a one time gift to build a new home
or a monthly contribution. Thanks from all of us at Bomoyi Ya Sika!
