Traveling in Burkina Faso is always interesting...
This past month we went to Saraba to visit Loren and Donna Entz, missionaries working among the Samogho people group. Returning home Michelle and I drove together as far as Orodara. From there I proceeded by myself to N’dorola to pay the staff their monthly salaries. Orodara to N’dorola should have taken 2 ½ hours but ended up lasting 5 hours.

Along the way I came across a detour for road construction. Having not taken this road very often it seemed natural that as the road was being built up that it would look different. Without any road signs or a map I began to wonder when I would reach my turn off point to N’dorola, which was the village Kourouma. Finally in my best Jula I began asking people I came across if this road goes to Kourourma. The two I asked confirmed just keep going. I thought to myself, “When I get to the next village I will ask for its name.” Soundou came the answer!! Just a few more kilometers and I would have ended up in Mali!! Apparently I had been traveling west instead of north.

This story illustrates how important it is to ask the question “Is this the right road?” properly. Culturally no one wants to offend the “tubabo”, meaning white person, so they will just agree with whatever you are saying!! So when I asked them if this road leads to Kourouma, they said yes in order to not offend me or shame me. Next time I will ask an open ended question such as, “What village is next on this road?” or “Where does this road go?”.

Thank you for praying for us.

Blaine and Michelle
