Earthquake Rocks Southern Peru Print E-mail
[Picture of destroyed home, photo from www.news.bbc.co.uk] Wednesday, August 15th, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake shook southern Peru. Soon after reports of the earthquake reached our office, MBMSI received communication from our missionary families stationed in northern Peru and we are happy to report that all are safe.

“We are OK but the constant news of dead and injured people is really hard,” write the Funk family.

Reports vary but according to the Associated Press, the earthquake has killed at least 400 people and left more than 1,500 injured. “A lot of help is being sent to those areas that are directly affected, but there are also small towns that are not getting any help yet. Many aid trucks are being robbed before they can get to their destination.”

The Funks share that their church is praying for the region and are already formulating a plan to help. They have decided to wait until things calm down a bit before going in. “These kinds of tragedies are soon forgotten, but reconstruction will go on for a long time. About 70% of homes in some cities are destroyed or damaged.”

PRAYER REQUESTS:
Please pray for Otto & Lidia Funk (Kevin), Robert & Erika Sukkau, Liana Penner and Jose & Esperanza Prada as they prepare to open their hearts and homes to those affected by this natural disaster. The families have specifically asked that we pray for them to be strong so they can give hope to those around them. They plan to keep their outreach programs going in an effort to provide a haven for people affected by the earthquake. Please pray that opportunities will arise for them to share the hope of Jesus! Join us in praying for the families that have lost family and friends. We are asking God for provision and comfort for these families and ultimately for the salvation of the Peruvian people.
