Location: Toyota, Japan

Missionary Hosts: Laurence & Leona Hiebert

Country Overview (view map ): Japan has a population of approximately 127 million people. The Japan MB conference (JMBC) was founded just after WWII and now has over 1,500 members in over 25 congregations. MBMS International partners with the JMBC by sending English teachers to give classes as part of the churches' evangelical outreach vision. Church planting has also been the center of our partnership and work there for over 50 years.

Assignment Description: The ministry assignment will begin with an orientation in Toyota, Japan with our long-term missionaries Laurence & Leona Hiebert. The church plant in Toyota where the Hieberts serve will act as your home base, however the team will travel to serve at three different churches in the region. Children's ministry and teaching English are the main focuses at each of the ministry locations.

Orientation
During the days for orientation, Laurence will ensure you have chunks of time on your own as a team for team building, etc. You will also do some local sightseeing and probably go on a Toyota Car Factory tour – after all you will be living in Toyota!

Teaching English
During children's ministry programs the team will act as English teachers. Children will divide into groups based on age and their ability to speak English and team members can work with the children in small groups. Teaching simple English songs or games that involve some English words are great teaching tools.

There will also be opportunity to help at an English school that targets adults and children. Classes will be small - approximately 2-5 students. With adults that know some English the focus will be conversational so the team will have an opportunity to share about themselves with the students one on one.

Children's Ministry Programs
The team will run children's programs in each of the churches they visit. You will be responsible to lead games, singing, crafts and a special carnival day. Fun, fun, fun! Many parents work incredibly long hours in Japan and so spend very little quality time with their children - these programs allow the team to show God's love to these children who are so eager to receive it.

Church Events with Adults
Small group settings, social get togethers or programs for church and nonchurch people are examples of events you will be involved in.

How you can prepare:
  • Be willing to be a friend
  • Share your testimony
  • Drama skits
  • If anyone on your team is musically inclined and can play an instrument – doing a few songs would be great – we will provide you with a songbook in your orientation handbook – feel free to bring other music that you are familiar with.
