January 2008
PACA
-We’re excited for the school year to start again so that we can continue to build relationships w/ the students. Jason is especially excited about coaching futsal (indoor soccer) & having Mr. Kuhns as his assistant.
-This picture was taken before Christmas with my (Andrea’s) discipleship girls. They all came over for a Christmas party.
Christmas in Boa Vista.
-We had the opportunity to go to Boa Vista for 2 wks and spend time with Jay, Kirsten, & Cristiana. Also, we got to be part of a special celebration as Aaron & Lorena got engaged. Although, I’m sure you’ve heard that news already! It was refreshing to be away from the big city, Sao Paulo, and to spend time relaxing in a smaller town in the country.
-During our time in Boa Vista, we met up with one of Jason’s old friends from Querencia, which I (Andrea) had also met on my first mission trip to Brazil. It was great to catch up with him and his girlfriend. Please pray for them as they have not made a commitment to Christ, but are truly seeking to learn more. They have asked Jay & Kirsten to mentor them as they are planning to have a baby and don’t know how to raise a family. We hope to see them again soon, possibly at Aaron & Lorena’s wedding in June.
Geocarlos & Janice
God’s amazing creation!
1 Chronicles 29:11 “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.”
-I once heard it said, “A change of place plus a change of pace, equals a change of perspective.” This past week we had the opportunity to have Grandpa & Grandma Mendel down to visit us and they took us to the most beautiful place I think that I’ve ever been. God continues to amaze us with His greatness and goodness. What a privilege to experience God and His creation in new ways!
Two gifts from God
#1 - During our first semester at PACA we have been sharing two cars between eight teachers, which has been fine most of the time, but we were having to have another family drive out of their way to pick us up for rides to church, and we took the bus a few times as well. We wanted to see how well we could get by for one semester without a car, and we did. We’ve been budgeting and shopping around for a car for a while and in January, we were able to purchase our first car as a couple! It is a Fiat Tempra ‘95, and it has already been a huge blessing to us. Here is a picture of my husband at the wheel. I (Andrea) am still not driving in Sao Paulo.
#2 - Ever since we’ve been in Sao Paulo, I (Andrea) have been going through contacts three times as fast as I did in the States because the pollution is so bad here. After making some calculations we figured out that by doing Lasik eye surgery down here (where it’s cheaper), we would save a lot of money and hassle in the long run. So, on Jan. 7th I had the surgery. My eyes are still healing and my sight isn’t perfect yet, but should be in February, the doctor says. Please pray for my eyes to heal. Sight is a gift from God!
Carnaval Retreat.
-February 2-5 is a major Brazilian holiday called Carnaval. It is like to Marti Gras on a national scale. The name literally means “festival of the flesh.” The streets crowd during this time as sensuous samba parades and a party atmosphere take over the attention of the nation. Carnaval is an explicit exhibition of how the enemy has distorted the beautiful culture of this nation and it’s desperate need for redemption.
- We have the privilege over this holiday to go with the Youth Group of an American church on a retreat. Jason and I were asked to be the speakers. Please pray for the youth as about 30 JH & HS students are signed up to attend. Pray for the Holy Spirit to fill Jason as he prepares and is the speaker. I am also helping him look up scripture and put ideas together. We love working as a team and we praise God for His presence with us in the first six months of our marriage.
Thank you so much for all of you support and love. You are a blessing to us!
In Christ,
Jason & Andrea Edwards
