January, 2008
We had a great Christmas. Our church play had a cast of about 30 to present the Christmas story with a Latin twist. The church was full. Erika overdid it setting up the Christmas program and at the same time taking care of me in the hospital (see previous letter if this is news to you and want to know more), so much so that after Christmas she had to stay in bed for a few days with a bad cold. She’s fine now after taking it easier for a week, so we’re gearing up for the new year.
Last Sunday some of the leaders of the church prayed for Sergio la Rosa, our new pastor who is beginning this month to serve full-time. He is a Peruvian missionary and seminary professor who has a lot of experience in ministry. We are transitioning and dividing up the work with him while we are still active in the church so that in the months ahead he can slowly start to take over as pastor. He has been attending our church for about three years and has recently been on the Leadership Team so most things are familiar to him.
We have a challenge for those who like heights: to paint the outside of our church. As you can see in the picture, the painting has barely begun. But if climbing ladders and walking on scaffolds is not your thing, you can paint inside, make shelves or banners, or teach English to reach new people for Christ. We would like to finish the construction of our church building within the next year. If you are interested please contact an MBMSI office or us directly. Financial contributions to our building project C0152 will also be received with much gratitude. We are still lacking funds to complete the walls on the third floor and finish the pastor’s apartment. Our continued thanks go to those who support us so that we can cover our personal budget, C0103.
Prayer Requests
(1) I have been in and out of the hospital this past November and December recovering from a successful operation that removed a benign tumor that was connected to my prostate. Many thanks for prayers for my health, especially when I had a severe infection. Soon after I left the hospital I walked like an 80 year old man. But I have made progress! Now I feel like a 70 year old when I am on the street. Pray that soon I will feel like a 60 year old which is what I will be in a couple of months. Fortunately all this time I have been able to take Isaiah 40 to heart where it says that even though I may be slow on my feet, on the inside I can run and even soar like an eagle because it is the Lord who energizes me.
(2) Please continue to pray for our Leadership Team in Trujillo as it plans for the future, especially for Sergio la Rosa as he prepares to take over the pastorate in March. Please also pray for his wife Susan, their daughter Jessica who is in her first year of college in the U.S. and their son David who is in his last year of high school.
(3) Pray for the national convention to be held in our church January 31 – February 2.
(4)Elections for a new executive committee will be one of the highlights. That same weekend we have the installation of Pastor Sergio, and we will also celebrate our fifth anniversary as a church which is very important in this culture.
(5) Please pray for us personally as we transition out of the church in Trujillo and look to the Lord for guidance for the future.
In Christ’s Service,
Bob and Erika Sukkau
