February 2008
Greetings from the sunny country of Japan….where I seem to get lots of sunshine anyways! Although much of the rest of the country is under snow flurry activity, in Nagoya we have lots of sunshine with the occasional rainy day. Guess I am pretty lucky considering all of the snow you are having back home in Abbotsford!! I want to send a special thank you to Jim and Verna Hemmons for the lovely “snowman” letter - it was so cute and made my day!!
As you read this I’m just getting over a bout of bronchitis but am doing great. I feel really good, other than the husky voice (which I think I like better than my ‘normal voice’….ha ha ha)
Classes are going great as I prepare for Valentine’s Day next week. In Japan, the girls give chocolates to the boys on Valentine’s Day and then the boys will reciprocate in April on “white day” which is equivalent to “girl’s day”. I know when I told you about it a year ago it sounded strange to me then, but of course now it is something I just accept. The stores are filled with aisles and aisles of boxes of chocolates. It’s a good thing I don’t have to buy for many boys (just the kids in the classes) as it would become very expensive!!
I have almost finished the Purpose Driven Life and have been enjoying sharing it during chapel time. Some of the ladies at Fujigaoka Church enjoy it so much that they asked for copies of the book. Pastor Hattori picked up 3 copies for a few of the ladies in my 1pm class on Thursdays. And 3 ladies are also coming to the Bible study later this month at Sato-san’s home. That is so exciting!! I am including a couple of lines from emails that one of these ladies sent to me…I am just so blessed to be a part of her hearing about Jesus!!
Dear Wendy
I'm reading the Purpose Driven 1 chapter a day. I think it's a very interesting. I had been believing in God . I 'm praying to God everyday. I don't know yet that Jesus Christ is God. Now I'm in a such state.
Dear Wendy
Thank you so much send me e-mail. I'm happy. I want to talk with you about God (the Father, Son and Holly Sprit) & the Perpose Drive Life, but I can not speak in English well. I'm frustrated.
I usually speak a lot. I like to talk to the people. But I 'm quiet When I speak in English. I 'm looking forward to another lesson from the book tommorow in chapel time first (at once?)
These emails are from a lovely lady named Aki. I didn’t change any of her words or spelling so that you can see how much she wants to know Jesus more. I ask that you continue to pray for her (and all my students) as they learn who God is and please pray for Pastor Hattori and I as we share our faith with them. I am so encouraged to see God working in the students’ lives and your prayers make such a huge difference!!
This coming weekend (Feb. 9-11), I will be in Toyota with the Hieberts, Sean Amstutz (teacher from Toyota) and Andrea Dueck (teacher from Osaka). We are having some missionary meetings and then on Monday will drive to Osaka to hear Ray Harms-Wiebe speak. We hope to meet with Ray and share with him about God’s work in our areas.
The following weekend I will be going with 2 students to the prefecture of Fukui on a bus tour. We will be going to see the most popular dinosaur museum in Japan so needless to say I’m very excited. Please pray for us to have a safe journey and I hope to send some of those photos in my next letter.
Some prayer and praise items this time around are:
Praise:
For my health being restored
For the Purpose Driven Life
For letters, emails, prayers and support from all of you back home!
Prayer:
For Aki and the other 2 ladies who are reading the Purpose Driven Life and
also for the ladies who will be attending Bible study later this month
For my friend Nana who bruised her shoulder quite badly snowboarding
For Wakako, who lost her mother last week, and Seigetsu who lost her father
Thank you so much for your prayers! The seeds are starting to sprout and soon the harvest will be plentiful.
