One of the most enjoyable things I have done in my time in Peru is to have a preaching class with three of our most dedicated young people. The picture shows the five minute grad ceremony on a Sunday morning where I gave each one of them a Spanish Life Application Study Bible. Please pray for Carlos, Claudia, and Diana. They have a great future. Please pray that they will dedicate their lives to serving Jesus and that the adversary will not be able to influence this in any way.
The first weekend of February was an important date for us because we hosted the national convention of the MB Peruvian churches. The picture shows the delegates and guests. There was a good spirit in the meetings. What was attractive about this convention was that only one day was spent on business and for two days we had a great guest speaker who spoke on spiritual maturity. He said pastors are in a dangerous place if they relax because they consider themselves to be ahead of everyone in spiritual maturity.
And on Sunday we celebrated our church’s fifth anniversary as well as the installation of our new pastor, Sergio la Rosa. We had an attendance of 150 that day, a record. A number of Sergio’s friends from other churches came. If you have a sharp eye you can see our recently installed projector at the top of the picture. Some of our people spent a lot of time preparing a Power Point to mark the anniversary. The only thing is that this very Sunday there was no electricity! At least we have something to look forward to this Sunday.
This is a picture of Pastor Sergio’s installation. From left to right are myself, José Prada from Lima, Bert Elliot, Rolando Neyra, the new president of our national committee, and Sergio kneeling. Bert is a long-time missionary here and Sergio’s friend. He is also Jim Elliot’s brother. Many of you older people will remember that Jim was one of the five martyrs who died in Ecuador at the hands of the Aucas in 1956.
A few churches are planning to send teams to come down this year to help finish with the construction of our church building. They plan to paint, make shelves or banners, or teach English to reach new people for Christ. If you are interested, please contact an MBMSI office or us directly. Financial contributions to our building project C0152 will also be received with much gratitude. We are still lacking funds to complete the walls on the third floor and finish the pastor’s apartment. Our continued thanks go to those who support us so that we can cover our personal budget, C0103.
Prayer Requests
(1) Please continue to pray for our Leadership Team in Trujillo as it plans for the future, especially for Sergio la Rosa as he adapts to his role as pastor. Please also pray for his wife Susan, their daughter Jessica who is in her first year of college in the U.S. and their son David who is in his last year of high school.
(2) Please pray for Rolando Neyra, our new president, and the rest of the national committee as they guide our association of Peruvian churches.
(3) On a personal level, we give thanks because I am recovering well from my operation. Some people have asked me how old I am feeling. Soon after I left the hospital I walked like an 80 year old man. But I have made progress! For a number of weeks I felt like a 70 year old when I was on the street. But now I feel like I’m 65 years old. Pray that soon I will feel like a 60 year old (which is what I will be in a couple of months). Some fine day I would like to jog again.
(4) Please pray for us as we transition out of the church in Trujillo and look to the Lord for guidance for the future. It’s never easy to say goodbye to people you love.
In Christ’s Service,
Bob and Erika Sukkau
