Why support Congolese university students?
Higher education in the DRC is collapsing. Most institutions lack the
capacity to educate their students. The highly educated have since
begun to age, the resource materials are old and worn out and the labs
and libraries are no longer functional.
In addition, the DRC has been plagued by “brain-drain”. 80% of all
students trained in the west never come back.
Of the 20% that do come
back, half of them go back to the west. And training a Congolese in
the west costs about $50,000/year – about $48,000 more than it costs in
DRC. To top it all off, the education received in the west is often
inappropriate for Congolese situations where conditions are different.
Not only are educated people needed, but leaders are needed. DRC suffers from a dearth
of leadership. The ability to manage people, projects and programs is
lacking at all levels. Many individuals are plagued by narrow
worldviews leaving them incapable of generating their own solutions to
Congolese problems.
Finally, it is an opportunity to reach out to the intellectual community. The call for help from the intellectual community
is not being answered. This is an opportunity for us to be involved
at an influential level in DRC.
