The Kanzombi clinic located in an interior town called Kikwit (pop:
>500,000), has been one of the major health centers in the city for
15 years but has not been able to achieve a hospital level of care due
to lack of resources. Some examples include lack of operating
instruments and electricity for the operating room, mattresses for the
beds and diagnostic equipment for the nurses and doctors.
Centre de Santé de Reference de Kanzombi (CSRK): was started
about 30 years ago by missionaries in Kikwit (pop. 500,000) who bought
a large piece of property for ministry on the outskirts of the city.
Now the city has grown around the property and the Congolese MB Church
has assumed its ownership. The last 10 years has been particularly
difficult for Kikwit. The only other referral health institution in
the city is the General Hospital, which has itself been poorly
supported. There are few options for the large urban population as
well as the very populated surrounding rural area (?2 million). The
chief medical inspector for the province says a well running Kanzombi
with quality hospital services is desperately needed by the community.
However, Kanzombi has been unable to meet the need. Presently the
clinic has no doctor, no running water, no electricity and little
equipment.
