BTEDE is a local initiative providing expertise and resources for the
over 30 associations in its membership. Each association has projects
which they manage, mainly agricultural, though some are commercial
(soap making, juice production). BTEDE offers expertise and counseling
in the form of
site visitations, seminars and a small resource
center. BTEDE also distributes resistant manioc cuttings and palm
seedlings and helps initiate vegetable gardens.
Edgard Kimbau
Edgard is a leader. He is a leader because he is a person of integrity
attempting to benefit his community. For the last 5 years he has been
walking from village to village encouraging development and giving
agriculture advice. He survives on the small amounts of food and money
village groups can give him.
Committed to see
his people move forward, he believes that agriculture is a key element
in the picture—not only for the economics of the area but also because
of the high rate of malnutrition in children.
Each community he visits has formed
organized groups, or associations, structured around the local MB
church. The goal is that each MB church in the country will have at
least one association. Presently there are over 140 associations
involving just under 100 churches. He hopes that by the end of next
year there will be over 300 churches with associations producing for
their communities.
Through funding
receive from the Presbyterians, Edgard now has an office, a motorbike
and access to free seed for distribution. His organization, called
BTEDE, plays a key role in economic development and church growth.
Edgard is an example of grassroots initiative: the kind of leadership
the country needs.
Bureau Technique d’Encadrement pour le Développement Endogène
BTEDE is an organization empowering local development initiatives. It has over 140 development associations in its membership, each association with its own project. In this context, BTEDE offers expertise and counselling in the form of site visitations, seminars and a small resource center in Kikwit. BTEDE also manages certain projects that support the associations, for example, diseased manioc management, distribution of palm seedlings and market gardening. Presently, BTEDE is trying new and innovative ideas to support health care in village communities by engaging local associations to give a percentage of their earnings to the clinic.
In addition, to agriculture, BTEDE is involved in (1) teaching skills (sewing, reading, etc.) to "abandoned young women" who have no support base in their communities, (2) teaching computer skills to young people and (3) home building programs.
