The Mennonite Brethren church was born in mission. Since our formation in the Ukraine in 1860, we have been motivated by the Great commission of Jesus recorded in Matthew 28, which calls us to make disciples of all people groups. Our passion has been to respond to people’s needs, to preach the Good News, to see people baptized, and to facilitate the formation of vibrant, multiplying conference of churches. This year marks the 108th year anniversary of an event in Buhler, Kansas that formalized our commitment to global mission. In October of 1900, nine men signed their names to a document to form the American Mennonite Brethren Mission Union. It was an effort to unite the North American Mennonite Brethren churches in a common cause of global mission. Could they have dreamed what the next hundred years would accomplish? Our team has included more than 2,400 people as resident missionaries. Hundreds more have served for shorter periods of overseas ministry through Christian Service and Good News Corps, and thousands have served short-term though Youth Mission International, Church Partnership Evangelism, and Global Volunteer construction teams. And of course, the teams includes each church or individual who helped to fund the work, who prayed for missionaries and new believers, and who hosted missionaries in their churches and homes. |
