Overview | Print |

JORNADA is an exciting new initiative to help prospective missionaries bridge the gap between short and long term service. ACTION and TREK have provided profound training in missionary spirituality and a short term ministry component. JORNADA, while including regular times of spiritual direction, will focus on ministry equipping and long term cross-culturalexperience.

Overseas Ministry Experience:
Participants in the JORNADA program will commit themselves to at least two and one half years of cross-cultural ministry. During this time they will dedicate themselves to language learning, where necessary, and active involvement in holistic church planting (leadership training, evangelism, social ministries). Their ministry experience will be mentored and evaluated by an experienced missionary team. They will also maintain regular communication with the MBMSI Team Leader for Training and Team Health. The team will receive visits from members of the lead team during the last half of their term for evaluation and discernment regarding future service. The final two months of the 3 year term will be dedicated to spiritual direction, mutual evaluation, and relationships with supporting churches. Through listening to God's voice and hearing each other, these concluding months will provide guidance for future cross-cultural ministry.

Spiritual Direction:
JORNADA participants will receive biweekly spiritual direction throughout their four month training period (8 sessions). The JORNADA team will also meet for regular periods of intercession for the world. Readings in missionary spirituality will be provided.

Ministry Praxis:
All JORNADA participants will actively engage in ministry to people groups of origin like or similar to that of their future areas of service. This involvement will be coached by an experienced mentor, preferably from the host culture or a missionary with service experience among that people group. Participants will have opportunity to observe missionaries and church leaders, serve in real life contexts, and receive constructive feedback on ministry practice.

Academic Reflection:
All JORNADA participants will be expected to complete two courses: (1) Dynamics of Cross-cultural Service, and (2) Cross-cultural Evangelism and Church Planting. Participants will also be required to do area studies. Our desire is that student work receive credit toward a Masters program. If the participant has already completed one or more of the required courses, he or she may elect to take other courses related to his or her future assignment. Readings in Perspectives on the World Christian Movement will also be suggested.

Finances:
JORNADA participants will be expected to raise $1000 USD in monthly support, and also finances for international travel, prior to departure for assignment. Couples and families will need to raise support according to their particular needs. This support should be raised through sending churches and related individuals.
