As the only medical facility in a slum of 100,000 people, Bon Berger is taking on many aspects of poverty and social marginalization.
Seeing medical doctors graduate in the
Democratic Republic of Congo is extremely rare, but seeing them remain to
practice in this poor and war-torn country is almost unheard of. After graduating
in 2002 Drs. Pierre and Delphin not only decided to stay in Congo, but chose to set up a small clinic in one
of Kinshasa’s
poorest slums.
Beginning in a 10 by 10 room, the Bon
Berger clinic became the only health centre serving this community of over
100,000 people. By God’s grace and their own resolve the clinic has now grown
into a new building with 24 beds, an operating room and a maternity.
Delphin, Pierre and their staff of 20 are
a visible reflection of God’s love for this seemingly forgotten community.
Their desire to see the village and its people transformed has also led them
beyond health into new avenues of service. Vocational skill training is
empowering women to overcome oppression, literacy courses are providing
unschooled children with opportunity and micro-credit is unlocking the creative
potential of hundreds more.
While the Church in Congo is poor, it is nonetheless
alive in mission. The goal of MBMSI Community Development is to encourage the
vision of indigenous lay-leaders – like Delphin and Pierre - as they pursue
holistic outreach within their context. We invite you to join us as we seek to
support them in a humble and incremental way.
