I've been reading the life story of Annie (Dyck) Buhler this week. She served with MBMS International in Colombia and Panama for almost 40 years. Her gifts were in education and discipleship. Annie's adventure in mission led her to the jungle on the border of Colombia and Panama where she supported our church planting efforts in that challenging region. Her good friend Herta Voth (who also served with MBMSI for many years in that region) remembers her as a gifted servant who lived generously and with humility. Annie finished the race well. Although Herta is officially retired, she continues to run a good race.

CBC television (a Canadian network) recently ran a story in follow up to the tsunami rebuilding work in Southern Thailand. They profiled a number of Christian groups working in the area including the Mennonite Brethren. The story suggested that the beauty and cultural history of Thai Buddhism are now being eroded by Christianity - a foreign belief system. More than that, the story implied that conversions are being bought or manipulated by unscrupulous missionaries in exchange for rebuilding work. One of our workers, Rob Griffioen, made a clear statement that our compassionate aid in the name of Christ is never done to manipulate conversions. He went on to state that biblical conversion is an experience of someone's free will response to Christ's offer of forgiveness and freedom.

outlining a number of churches that had been closed and leaders
arrested. This communication caught my attention because we will be
meeting with a number of these North African leaders this spring for
ongoing equipping and discipleship. The verbal and spiritual violence
they regularly face is tiring.

The recent Kenya election crisis has captured the attention of the western world with pictures of violence and indications of fraud. Having spent a number of years growing up in Kenya while my parents served on the MCC Teachers Abroad Program (TAP) in the 1960's, I've followed the current crisis with interest.

I had an interesting conversation with a young man coming out of a worship service recently. He asked me what I thought about witnessing with our bodies. When I looked a little puzzled he explained that he was thinking about getting a tattoo with a picture of the cross and a heart combined with a verse of scripture. He wondered what I thought of that idea. I asked him if he had checked out the Bible on this topic. He assured me he had read the relevant scripture on tattoos and cutting from Leviticus 19:28.
